FAQs

This research is being carried out as a part of the doctoral research project titled: Inspiration in Daily Life: How Does Inspiration Relate to Creativity and Well-Being? in the Department of Psychology at The Graduate Center and Brooklyn College, City University of New York.

Who can participate?

To qualify, you must be older than 18 years old and fluent in English. If you are unsure of your qualification, do not hesitate to contact the principal investigator.

What is involved with participation?

Participation is entirely voluntary. First, you will be asked to complete an initial survey which will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Then, for the following 13 days, we will send you a shorter survey once a day in the evening. Each day's survey will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.

Are there any known risks to participating?

There is very low risk of physical, psychological, and/or social discomfort, and very low economic and/or internet/mobile technological risk barring any unforeseen circumstances in the proposed study. You will be asked various questions about yourself, your creative activities, inspiration, emotions, and well-being. While the content of these questions are not anticipated to be sensitive, each person is different in how they feel during self-reflection. If you are uncomfortable let the experimenter know and you are free to stop at any time. You may also contact the principal investigator or the CUNY Research Compliance Administrator.

Are there any benefits to participating?

There are no direct benefits to you for participating. Some participants may enjoy the process of reflecting on their daily emotions and creative practices. Additionally, if you complete the study, you will have a chance to win one of five $100 cash gift cards. On a larger scale, your participation might aid our scientific understanding of how inspiration relates to creativity and well-being.

Is my participation confidential?

The data obtained from you via survey responses will be de-identified and anonymized. The de-identified and anonymized information collected from you as part of this study may also be used in future research studies or be distributed to another investigator for future research studies without additional informed consent.

Who is conducting this research?

The Principal Investigator of this study is Kaile Smith, a doctoral psychology student at the Graduate Center, City University of New York under the supervision of Dr. Jennifer Drake and Dr. Aaron Kozbelt. More information about the researchers and supervisors can be found at this link.

Will I get anything for participating?

Upon completion of the full study (completing at least ten daily surveys), you will be entered into a raffle to win one of five $100 cash gift cards. Winners will be drawn once all participants complete the study (approximately Summer 2023). We will contact you if you win and gift cards will be sent to your email. Bots, scammers, and repeat submissions are excluded from the data and are not eligible.

What will happen to the study's results?

This research is part of a graduate thesis that will be submitted in partial fulfillment of a Ph.D. in Psychology. A report of the findings from this study may be submitted for future publication. No participant will be identifiable in any way. If you would like a summary of the findings, please email a request to the principal investigator or sign up for updates at the bottom of the page.
